FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know About Trekking in Peru

What is the best trek to Machu Picchu?

The Salkantay Trek (5 days) is the best alternative — no permit lottery, more scenic, more affordable. The Classic Inca Trail (4 days) is the most iconic but permits must be booked 4–6 months ahead. The Short Salkantay Trek (4 days) is ideal for limited time.

How difficult is the Salkantay Trek?

Moderate to challenging. Hardest section: Salkantay Pass at 4,630m on Day 2. Good physical fitness required — no technical climbing needed. Recommend 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400m). Guides carry supplemental oxygen throughout.

When is the best time to trek in Peru?

Dry season (May–October) — clear skies, minimal rain. June–August most popular; book early. Wet season (November–April): fewer crowds, lush landscapes, lower prices but daily afternoon rain. All treks operate year-round.

What is included in your tours?

Fully all-inclusive: certified bilingual guide, all meals, accommodation (camping or lodges), train return from Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu entrance, porters, bus to ruins, first-aid with supplemental oxygen. Flights and personal insurance not included.

Do I need a permit for the Inca Trail?

Yes — limited to 500 people/day. We handle the permit application. Permits sell out 4–6 months ahead for peak season. The Salkantay Trek requires no permits and can be booked any time.

Is online booking safe? How do I pay?

Book 24/7 via SSL-encrypted system. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and PayPal accepted. Deposit secures your spot; balance due 30 days before departure. MINCETUR-licensed. Free cancellation up to 30 days before your trek.

What altitude will I reach on these treks?

Cusco: 3,400m · Salkantay Pass: 4,630m · Rainbow Mountain: 5,200m · Machu Picchu: 2,430m. Allow 2–3 days for acclimatization in Cusco. Ask your doctor about Diamox. Guides carry supplemental oxygen on all high-altitude tours.

Is Rainbow Mountain different from the Salkantay Trek?

Rainbow Mountain is a 1-day trip to Vinicunca at 5,200m. The Salkantay Trek is a 4–7 day expedition ending at Machu Picchu. Both can be combined — see our Salkantay + Rainbow Mountain combo.
